Jay L. Clendenin, fotógrafo do LA Times, realizou um belo ensaio fotográfico autoral tendo como tema os atletas olímpicos americanos. O equipamento utilizado foi uma antiga câmera de grande formato.

Os jogos olímpicos estão em alta. A imprensa internacional só fala disso e, na parte de fotografia, não poderia ser diferente. Ótima oportunidade também para alavancar um projeto de fotografia autoral. Até eu tive a ideia de fazer umas fotinhas com o tema. Mas, quando o assunto são os grandes fotógrafos americanos, a brincadeira fica um pouco mais séria.

A fotografia autoral é uma forma de expressão particular do fotógrafo. Sendo um trabalho comercial ou apenas artístico, o fotógrafo tem a liberdade de utilizar a sua criatividade e fugir do lugar comum. Nesse ponto rompemos a barreira do simples registro e passamos a entrar no caminho dos trabalhos artísticos.

Foi o que fez o fotógrafo Jay L. Clendenin. Ele trabalha para o jornal LA Times e recebeu a incumbência de fazer uma série de retratos dos atletas olímpicos americanos. Os retratos foram feitos antes dos atletas viajarem para os jogos do Rio de Janeiro e foram publicados em uma reportagem especial do jornal.

Em 2012 ele já havia feito uma série com atletas olímpicos utilizando uma câmera de campo 4x5 com uma lente Petzval de 100 anos de idade. O resultado ficou muito bacana, mas ele queria algo mais ousado agora. Para fotografar a nova geração de atletas ele utilizou uma câmera de grande formato 8 × 10 Tachihara que herdou do amigo e colega Bruce Moyer que morreu em 2013. Para você caro leitor ter uma ideia, estamos falando de um equipamento que, junto com tripé e lente, pesa em torno de 10 kg. Ela utiliza negativos de tamanho 8 × 10 polegadas. Ou seja, um monstro.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA --JUNE 20, 2016 --

Clendenin explica, em seu artigo para LA Time, que a escolha do equipamento poderia trazer várias possibilidades artísticas, mas financeiramente poderia ser inviável. Atualmente, nos EUA, trabalhar com filme de médio formato é muito caro. Cada chapa de filme 8 × 10 processado custa em torno de US$ 20,00. Se levar em conta que cada atleta consumiu 10 fotogramas, então cada sessão custaria US$ 200,00 só de processo de revelação. A solução foi eliminar o filme e fotografar direto com papel fotográfico.

Ou seja, Clendenin trabalhou com uma gigantesca câmera Pin-hole. As fotos eram capturadas em papel e depois processadas na casa do fotógrafo, no seu banheiro (quem é da antiga sabe o que é isso). Depois as imagens foram escaneadas e invertidas no Photoshop. No artigo do LA Time existe um vídeo mostrando o processo.

Com um pouco de criatividade e algum investimento é possível fazer um trabalho muito legal dentro da fotografia.
